How to discourage goldfinches (1 Viewer)

We have a nice selection of titmice, chickadees, wrens, nuthatches, cardinals, house finches, etc. However we have way too many goldfinches. There can be 20 trying to use my two feeders at once. To some extent, they keep the other small birds away.

Is there anything I can do, short on taking in my bird feeders, to decrease the number of goldfinches to a reasonable number?

Thanks for any help.

Maybe put different food in the two feeders? The goldfinches will probably still dominate the one with their favourite in, but the other one might be freed up for the other species. Not sure about your goldfinches but our European ones eat seeds, so if you put nuts in one they will give the others a chance.

Other than that, its just the way nature works. Just enjoy. It sounds like you have some good variety.

If you have too many Goldfinches then send them my way.

I used to have regular visits from Goldfinches and then they stopped coming despite the fact there was plenty of food for them. A few weeks ago I had five in the garden. They were the first visitors for at least three to four years.

So please send your surplus to me. Hopefully they will have the energy to fly such a long way.

Harold.

5 American Goldfinches in Gloucester would be a mega! don't tell too many or your garden will be besieged;)

Get a blackcap to visit ,I have on thats only arrived 2 days ago a7 thinks it owns the feeder,it sits on the fence & attacks all the small birds especially the goldies
