Help! Swan in my garden! (1 Viewer)

I've just come home from walking my dog and a neighbour alerted me to the fact there is a swan hiding under some laylandii trees in my front garden! I have no idea how it got here, it's standing up so i'm assuming it's not injured but i'm worried in case it's stuck and unable to get out. The trees are very thick (about 8 foot deep!!) and in desperate need of chopping back, there is a tiny hole where the swan currently is and it has it's back to the hole so perhaps it can't turn around to get out? I live on a housing estate not immediately close to any water and I have never seen any swans in this area before, neither flying nor walking. I can't find much help online and the RSPCA want to be sure it cannot get out on it's own before they are willing to help. Any suggestions as to what I can do?

Hi Caroline and welcome to Birdforum from all the Staff and Moderators.

Swans find it very difficult, if not impossible, to take off from dry land, so you will need the help of an animal rescue centre to sort this one out.

You could try finding one near you from this site, or perhaps call one of them for some advice - maybe they know someone near you.

Hi. Yes there are some telegraph wires going from house to house so it could well have struck one of those

I phoned the RSPCA again and told them it cannot get out on it's own and would be unable to fly away even if it did, they said they were going to pass the information on to my local branch so now i'm just waiting and hoping they turn up soon. I think it may have been there all night so it must be very hungry and scared, poor thing.

No not at all, he just grabbed him by the legs, pulled him out and then put him in the van, all in a matter of seconds. They said he had a mark on his neck so thought it was more thank likely he's flown into the overhead cables.The RSPCA guy said it was one of the best hiding places he'd ever seen. I really hope he hadn't been in too long

Well that job seemed too easy.. not like some of the scenes we get to watch on the telly LOL. But I'm so glad it worked out with so little stress to the swan. Did they say if they'll let you know what happens to him?
