Help! Had to move a nest of eggs to save them . . . (1 Viewer)

This morning our dog was disturbing a plant on our deck. It seemed odd that she was so intent on that one plant (it was in a larger sized pot). Hubby went over there & discovered what we believe to be a finch nest that had 🥺 5 eggs - the dog had broken 3 😢. If we left it where it was dog would have ended up eating them we're sure, so hubby put the entire pot into the tree next to the deck (total of 3 feet away from spot). I'm not sure parents will even look for the nest & then the remaining 2 eggs will be abandoned. We didn't feel we should just leave it though because then Mija would have just done what dogs do . . . .eat the eggs.

Is there a chance the parents may find the nest even though it is 3 feet from where it was (& higher up)?? Why would the birds build a nest so low on the ground in the 1st place? We've been at this house since 1993 & this is the 1st time any bird has ever put a nest basically on the ground level . . . we've had lots of nests in the eaves of the house & in our trees & bird boxes.

Thank you for any help.

Welcome to Birdforum.

I understand you were trying to help, but it is illegal in many states to interfere with or move a live nest. It is likely that the parents will abandon the nest. In future, it is best to let nature run its course and the parent birds will learn to choose a better nest site in future.
