Hedgehog Noises (2 Viewers)

Hello everyone,
There were 2 Hedgehogs in my front garden tonight and then were constantly making funny sniffing noises. I see hedgehogs in my garden but regularly but have never found them to be quite so vocal. Could someone explain what they were doing?
Tom

We've occasionally heard our local hedgehogs making quite loud snuffling noises and we surmised it is sort of a challenge/greeting sound. When we were watching them as they made these noises, they seemed to be arguing over the food we had put out for them. Most of the time we only see one hedgehog at a time going through the garden, but when they meet they seem to make these noises.

Same here. They snuffle and huff, even when alone. They rely on scent for food location, so a lone feeding animal will make plenty of noise on its own. Noise seems to increase when there are more animals foraging in the garden. Its a great noise to go to sleep to!

whilst sitting at my astro scope at night over the last month or two, i had a hedgehog that made a noise like a distant train over the rails, every night it was same constant noise, it seemed to be always heading towards me. in the dark it was quite spooky not at all hedgehogy, quite reminded me of the noise of the approaching zulus in the film zulu. also every now and again a fox would scramble over the fence, see me and go back again, i was never alone for very long.

I have watched the start of a "courting" session.
The male tried to approach from behind. The female made loud huffing sounds and turned so her behind was not in line. He moved and tried again, she grunted and moved etc. The sounds were as if she was breathing out loudly and sharply.
