Hello, is it possible to ID the gull in this photo? Seen today at a river near Spremberger Talsperre reservoir in NE Germany. I assume the possibilities are Caspian and Herring, based on local prevalence.

Hello Henry,

its an adult Caspian Gull imo. Please note
  • small head, quite longish neck abd slightly bulging breast resulting in a good "giraffe-like" impression, more expressed in ID friendlier individuals, but still there in your bird
  • small dark eye
  • bleached, but pure yellow bill, some YLG have deeper yellow bills
  • long white tip on p10 on undersite
  • longish legs? at least I think so, or am I biased
I think its a pure one, as I cant detect any Herring Gull features, greyish pale pink legs are within variation, they arent bright or pure pink.
