My dad has just brought home a injured great tit baby and we dont know what to feed it. Its a newly fledged....
i think it might of hurt its leg. We currently feeding it water and tiny bits of cat food, its extremely weak....
Take it to your local Vet. Don't phone first, just turn up with it. They will do what they can and will know of a Rescue Centre, should one be needed.[/QUOTE
we dont know of any vets which will take him in this area.... the little one, is now and then, whirring his wings but he looks really bad. I will look on the iternet to see about local vets around my area but i dunno if its going to pull through anyway:-C

Find a Vet close to you, and just turn up with it. They won't refuse to assess any wild animal brought to them (but they will say take it somewhere else if you phone them first).
I have taken many sick or injured birds to the Vets. Often they just get a shot of antibiotics and keep them overnight. Some are put to sleep if they are suffering.
The Vets is the best place for it.

Sounds as though you're not sure whether it is injured or not. My advice is - put it back. Its parents will continue feeding it. If it isn't injured, they are its best chance. If it is injured, it hasn't much future anyway. Let nature decide.
yea, i see what you are both saying but i just cant let it die, its its only chance in life:-C if it survives till about 4.30 we might take it to a vet somewhere. its sleeping at the mo and now and then we feed it bit of cat food and water on a spoon. It cant stand it only lays on its side......
Whatever you decide, you have to live with the consequences of that decision. Taking it to the Vets isn't necessarily a one way trip, it may be fine after treatment. OTOH, if it's suffering, then the Vet ending that suffering is the best thing for the bird.
Whatever you decide, watching it suffer wouldn't be a choice you'd live happily with after.
So, unless a Vet replies to your post, ignore any further replies and do what you believe is best for the bird.
the good news is that the fledgling survived the night and he is taking food from a tiny dropper ( he called at one point ) the bad news is that he cant stand for some reason, but it has got better, he props himself up now....
Well I'm glad it's survived. The problem you may have is birds can get infections from injuries. If it develops an infection it will most likely die without antibiotics.
It really would be best to get a Vet to check it over.
allright we will try and take it to a vet but unless it is really really ill (no hope) i wont let them euthanise it. Cheers for the help Chris:t:
i have just checked him over and i cant see any visible cuts or open wounds ( does it have too be wounded to get infection or can it get it from broken bones?)
Little bird died about an hour ago, i did my best for it and hopefully it is at peace. We are going to bury it later......
R.I.P LITTLE BIRD.
It's sad, but I'm afraid it was always the most likely outcome. It's very easy to say leave it be, let the outcome be decided naturally. But it's never easy when the sick/injured bird is looking up at you.
We just buried it up at in the shops garden and placed a rock over the mound.
yea i know what you mean, i feel very sad but relieved that he died and can be at peace finally (sorry if im deppressing)
Taylor,
You're not depressing me, I know exactly how you feel.
From memory, in the last 2 years I have buried at least 4 Blackbirds, at least 6 Starlings, and at least 10 Pigeons. I really can't remember exactly how many. Most of those that died were either a casualty of Cats, or of Magpies, or they died of an illness.
Most of the sick birds died in my house, I removed them from the population to prevent the disease spreading amongst the other 100+ birds in my garden. Some went to the Vets and got a shot of antibiotics, of those, most died anyway after I brought them home (it was viral and they weren't strong enough to survive).
But, and to me this is the important bit, I have taken in a few stunned birds and released them when they recovered. I have also removed string/twine from the feet of many Pigeons, and from a few Starlings. Those last two are the fault of Humans, so I don't see it as interfering (others will disagree I'm sure).
However, I never intervene with predators (Sparrowhawks, etc), in my mind that's just Nature. I suppose in a way we all interfere with Nature every time we fill the feeders or the bird baths.
So you are not the only one, many of us try to help at one time or another, unfortunately, sometimes we fail.
