Goshawk? - Boston, Lincolnshire, UK (1 Viewer)

Hi,

After an incredible week (23 lifers - it helps if you're new to this thing) i've got one more bird to ID. My closest guess is a juvenile Northern Goshawk (Accipitor gentilis)

Location: Boston, Lincolnshire
Description: a ditch next to some farmland
Time: Friday in the mid afternoon

I was able to turn the car around safely and use it as a hide to make these pictures.

yep - kestrel.

As mentioned the bird is a Kestrel. A Goshawk would be considerably larger and would look rather differently than your Kestrel. Here is a picture of a juvenile Goshawk:

Goshawks are also usually found in or on the edge of forests.

Thank you guys for all your replies.

Now that i look at the drawing in Peterson's guide again, and with a lot of imagination, it looks indeed like a kestrel.

If i compare it with other photos of kestrels of the internet the resemblances are much better.

I guess the moral of the story is: you can never have enough bird-guides.

its actually as good a Goshawk as many accepted Lincolnshire records though!!
