Good field guide for Greece/Croatia? (1 Viewer)

Anybody have any recommendations?

I'll be in the Greek Islands next May and then going to Croatia and maybe Bosnia for a couple weeks.

Right now all I have is the Peterson Europe book, so I think most things would be a decent upgrade.

Svensson et al is easily the best field guide for Europe:

Yes, definitely Svensson. It has just come out as an updated second edition. Though the first edition would be an excellent choice as well. (Unless you are particularly into gulls. But even there, May would not be critical.) The links above show this second edition anyway.

Great and thanks!

I had found that title on Amazon, but wasn't sure how far east it went.

Looks like a great book to have anyway.

When I was in Crete a few years ago I found a few birds that weren't in my Peterson "Europe" book (or I was just a newbie and failed).

It's been so long since I switched from Peterson to other FGs that my first reaction was "Must have been the latter, as Crete should be covered". But you are definitely correct, Peterson stopped further west with the covered range.

The present Svensson and the predecessors not only goes east to at least the Jordan Valley, but it also covers North Africa and the Atlantic Islands that politically belong to Europe, except for the Azores. So the main problem now is that there are so many species that one does not "need" when visiting only a restricted area. While I'm perfectly happy with this wide coverage, there are people who find it confusing.

Sounds like a bargain for just under $20 off amazon.

@Swissboy

Yeah if I could find my old notes I could potentially sort out an armchair tick or two. =p

I had no problems with the old Peterson in the cyclades, but once I went down to Crete I guess I had strayed a bit too far south.
