I have about 20 - 30 gold finches on my 4 nyjer seed feeders, they empty them in a couple of hours, some feed on the ground with tge chaffinchs. It's impossible to keep up as the seed is expensive. If I use peanuts in the peanut feeders, sparrows arrive in large numbers and clear away the finches. Any ideas of how to keep wastage down

Hi Steve and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. We do get influxes of different species sometimes, my way round it is to feed only what I can afford to. Every now and then I get Jackdaws and/or at my feeders and they go through all the fat balls in half an hour! So I ration them and also make that feeder harder for the Jackdaws to fly at!

Goldfinches don't normally eat peanuts but some may I suppose. Funny, my sparrows rarely, if ever, look at the peanuts, only being interested in mealworms, seeds and the little suet pellets. I'm not sure what you mean by "wastage" I don't see you mention where that is happening.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

As you are wanting more information about feeding, I'll move your post to the Garden Birds forum.
