geese flying at night, chester uk (1 Viewer)

I often see skeins of geese flying over our house in saltney, chester, UK. Usually early morning or at dusk, I presumed they were going to + fro between the dee estuary and fields in wales for grazing?
Anyway, just been out for a smoke, and heard some geese flying over heading south, at 10pm pitch black. Is this normal, where they going, how on earth do they see to land? Or are they likely migrating and keep going till dawn?

It's quite normal for Geese to fly during the night, they will migrate at night but they also often feed during the night especially when there's a moon. They must be able to see better than we can in the dark though their nught vision doesn't seem to be all that brilliant.

The birds may also have been disturbed while roosting by a Fox or something that "spooked" them Into flying off from where they were.
