Florida Bird Book (1 Viewer)

This past March I visited some friends who live in Florida. They had a small book of Florida birds they bought in a local book store but they were having a hard time ID'ing common feeder birds. Most of the "Florida only" books I saw were not very good.

If yor travels are going to limit you to Florida, I'd concur with the Sibley Field Guide to Birds - Eastern North America.

One book I would highly recommend is A Birder's Guide to Florida by Bill Pranty. You can get it through Amazon or the American Birding Association for about $25. It gives an excellent description of many birding sites and the bar graphs in the back are very helpful in figuring out which birds will be found during your visit. It did a very good job of putting me right on certain species.

Thanks Tero & Runaround,
Rob (Touche) on the forum had a copy of (A Birders Guide to Florida) which he sent me, so location of birds should not be a problem. My problem is identifying them. I take a photo then do the ID on the computer later. I know that is proberly cheating but I can't stop snapping with the camera.

We are in Florida for 28 days in Jan 2008 and with the number of places to go birding we may be able to sneak into Georgia and Alabama for a spot of birding.

Thanks for the info anyway and HAPPY BIRDING to you both
Jim

Jim, if you make it to GA, then check out the Wings over GA website. It'll give you directions to lots of places.

I also highly recommend the Sibley Eastern guide to use as a field guide. IMHO, Sibley's is by far the best field guide for the US.
Hope you have a good trip!

For identification, Sibley is sufficient. If you plant to look at gulls and shore birds, I do not know what will be on the shore then, your skills in the UK will come in handy. There is a lot of overlap. You can even bring Collins, it has better gulls than Sibley.
