First trip to Scotland (1 Viewer)

I am in the early stages of planning my first birding trip to Scotland with a couple of friends in late April/Early May.;)

As it is our first time there and we will probably come up by train from Kent I thought we might take it easy and go for package in the Aviemore area.

Would appreciate any initial advice or recommendation on which firm to use e,.g Heatherlea.:t:

Then any other advice guidance for that time and area would be well received. My main aim is to see Male Capercaillie all the others that can be seen will therefore be a bonus.

Am hoping not only to birdwatch but maybe a bit of photography/digiscoping.

Cheers

Well you've chosen exactly the right time of year to see capercaillie displaying at the Loch Garten caperwatch. The peak display period is usually the third week in April. You may need more than one attempt as the birds are not always visible by all accounts.

Try searching through the trip reports forum for speyside and aviemore and you should find plenty of info for this time of year.

Strathspey is the best place in Scotland to see Capercaillie so your in the right place and going at the right time. Heatherlea are excellent and well worth looking up www.heatherlea.co.uk. You could also try out Speyside Wildlife www.speysidewildlife.co.uk. For nature photography holidays then I recommend www.wildshots.co.uk. Hope you have a nice holiday and get to see some great birdlife!!!

Thanks

Have made a provisional booking with Hetherlea for 19-26 April subject to my friends sorting out holiday from work, cat sitters...etc!

Enjoy yourself. It is a magical time of year to visit and you shall have plenty of daylight to discover the area and see some of the Strathspey specialities.
