Sparrowhawk
Can someone identify this bird please, I cannot find it in my Collins Bird Guide. Thanks

Shot today in my garden in Derby UK. He stayed only briefly to feed off the top of one of the feeders.

Thanks I knew it wasn't a UK bird, I wonder if anyone locally has lost it?

It probably escaped. I cant see why else it would be lose. I wonder how its getting along. Maybe you could go closer to it and see if it flies away or stays, to see if it a captive bird.

Any way you can borrow a cage from someone? Set it up on your back porch or wherever you are seeing it with the cage door open and seed inside. If it's a caged bird it will go towards it.

It only stayed a few minutes, and I have not seen it since. I have put a note in our local Forum, but no reply as yet.
If we see it again I will try and approach it.

Zebra Finch is native to Australia and is a popular cagebird in Britain. They escape regularly, though in 40 years I've not seen one her,but have seen them in the wild in Australia. It will not survive if not recaptured. The british weather is too harsh for them
