Feeding my blackbirds (1 Viewer)

I have a bird table mounted on a tree, much loved by 3 blackbirds who are regular visitors along with robins, blue and great tits. However, the local mob of 4 jackdaws now terrorises the bird table and scoff all the food. I am rigging up a guardian cage for the bird table and wondered if the blackbirds will be OK gripping the fine wire of the cage or whether I need to rig up a more substantial perch for them to be able to hop through the holes and access the food? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Blackbirds tend to be ground feeders, or they will feed from a table where they can stand. They would probably have trouble trying to grip the wire on the cage.

Hi, thanks for replying. That's what has been guiding my thinking. I shall rig up some kind of substantial perch similar to the dimensions of the branches they use in the nearby shrubs. They should be able to hop through the holes and access the food on the bird table that way.
Wish me (and the blackbirds) luck!

Welcome to Squawk Knox!
I gave rigged up a ground feeder guard over my tree-mounted bird table. I filled in the back with woven willow sticks. The blackbirds are very happy!

Hi again Birdbabbler - very well done getting this cage erected and I see the Blackbird seems very happy in there.

Don't ignore the Jackdaws they can be very entertaining (well as are all the corvids) and they need feeding too. You could try feeding them in a different part of the garden if possible. I have three come down to a shed roof (I'm above it and can throw feed onto it from my flat window). They're very handsome really with their silver grey heads.
