my yard has one of those in ground pools well its really old and filled itself with rain water and turned into a pond! now every day ducks are swimming it i feed them bread and cat food.

Near my house down the street is a huge colony of night herons and snowy egrets i was wondering is there any way to attract them as well? I think they are nesting here but they dont come into my yard like the ducks do? What can i feed them? This area has lots of water birds.

i was thinking ofbuying crawfish maybe and putting it in the pool? its more then a meter deep!

The trouble I can see you having, is that herons etc can't exactly swim as ducks do, they need to be able to stand up in the water to hunt, and if the water is over a metre deep, they're not going to be able to make much use of it. So unless you rig up something around an edge or in the middle that they can land on and wade along, I'm afraid the mere presence of water isn't going to attract them. Plus flying down into a space like that, they may feel vulnerable. You could try stocking it with small fish (native if you can get them) or crustaceans like the crawfish.
