Feeder height (1 Viewer)

Hi Folks,

How high will hummingbirds fly to get to a feeder? My wife and I live on the third floor of a condominium with a balcony. We just put up feeder and were wondering if it was for naught. Will hummingbirds fly up to a third floor balcony to reach a feeder. Also I know that they like red, but how do they respond to pink petunias? See pic.

Hi again.

You got me wondering further about this as I would like to know what the highest they've been observed so I put the query out on my Hummer listserv

I'll let you know what kind of answers I get.

Hi BartJY, and welcome!

A feeder on the third floor can certainly be visited by hummingbirds. I have a friend who lives on the 13th floor and has seen hummingbirds visiting the feeder she had on her balcony.

I don't know whether hummingbirds like petunias, but I know that they will investigate flowers of any color. In fact, I witnessed this morning a ruby-throated hummingbird checking one of the flowers on my Bells of Ireland. These flowers are pale green, and basically the same color as the leaves!

Haven't seen them feeding on the 13th floor, but I have seen them feeding on plants that were easily higher than the third floor!

Well I just heard of an apt dweller on the 27th floor in Montreal that has hummers coming to her feeder ;)
