Dragonfly eating a Butterfly (photo) (1 Viewer)

David Smith

Warrington Lancs
I was at Rixton clay pits (Nr Warrington) and watching what I think was a Hawker that was 'hunting' when suddenly it accelerated and caught what I think was a Meadow Brown butterfly. It took it to a nearby tree-a bit to high for a good photo hence the big crop.
So a few questions :-
Is it a Hawker?-it was quite big and 'perched' vertically-head up.
Do they normally eat something so relatively big?

Probably like a lot of people I thought they ate things like Greenfly which I can get my head around-but eating lovely butterflies seems a bit gruesome:eek!: (tongue in cheek-mine, not the dragonfly's)
