Does UK400 list still exist? (1 Viewer)

Out of interest, I removed my list from UK400 on BUBO last year as it was no longer being updated? Such as Black-winged Kite and Grey-Headed Lapwing, which couldn't be added.

I know many question the credentials of it anyway, but I quite liked its format and ideology that based listing largely on morphological differences.

I realise that its lack of updates on BUBO does not necessarily mean the whole concept of UK400 listing has disappeared altogether, the two of course are not intrinsically linked. But you would think Lee Evans would ensure it was kept updated on platforms like BUBO if he expects anyone to follow it.

Has Lee more or less withdrawn his own listing? Just wondered if anyone had an insight?

Indeed it seems not to have been updated since then. So no Grey-headed Lapwing nor Black-winged Kite.

It was really a one man band operation run by Lee Evans.
With all the taxonomic changes going on there is an agreement that a Birders list (like the UK400 list) is required which can remain stable. It would help when report writing. Just remember your list is your list you can count what you want.
I know that being able to compare how you are doing against others feeds the competitive side of birding and allows you to set targets. But this requires things like a set of rules about you can or can't count and a set list.

I do value my BOU list too but have now scrapped my UK400 list.

I suppose the query is whether a new species (say Canada Warbler) is being added by the BUBO team "off their own backs" or if Mr Evans is issuing a determination that it's accepted to the UKIP400 list.

Or, ask the website owners to create a new guiding authority for you based on that list, and you carry it on yourself from there.

These are not difficult things to do.

I don't know Lee and don't feel I could therefore become editor of his list. I accept that its not an unsurmountable problem, though I have never had any contact with him, do not even know how to contact him, and I doubt he would respond to me let alone give me permission. You would rightly point out, if you don't ask don't moan.

Not at all. I would and have recommended, for years, that no one contact an affirmed racist such as Lee Evans.

There is nothing to stop you, however, downloading the UK 400 list, or the BOU list from Bubo or any other source you wish, sitting down by yourself or with other like-minded people, generating a functional list that you think works and ask the guys at Bubo to upload the new checklist for you.

I know this can be done... because I did it.

No it's not possible I'm afraid. UK400 hasn't been supported for a long time and we won't be reintroducing it

No it's not possible I'm afraid. UK400 hasn't been supported for a long time and we won't be reintroducing it

So form your own organization, publish your version of the UK list online and ask them to create it for you.

It's pretty easy to do.

I did ask them that previously too...............I even offered them £100 to create a list similar to UK400 based on morphological differences. Told they couldn't do it as so few would be interested.

Its not just that I wanted to have a bigger list, it was so that I could detail things like the different Redpolls, different subspecies/races of Geese etc. UK 400 list was like that.

You will have to prove the case so. Start something. Build a membership. And go from there.

If you are registered with RBA you have another option: create your list selecting the "All forms" box which gives you a bit more leeway.
I use this facility for my list and have, for example, ticked Ruddy Shelduck, which I, along with many other birders , am confident I have seen in a wild state.

I can understand them not being eager to create a new list that isn't backed by some other authority. If every single person created there own list to follow, it would probably get unwieldy and confusing pretty quickly

That sounds interesting. I would also like to add Lammergeier as well as Ruddy Shelduck, also WH Duck, Paddyfield Pipit, Great Tailed Grackle - essentially not simply to increase the size of my list but just for my own wild bird list.
