Excellent Terry. I'm taking a holiday on the Caldon Canal at the end of July. Hoping for some good views of Kingfisher, birds of prey, Heron etc. What a splendid place the valley is. Any tips on the best places would be most welcome. Froghall Basin? Consall Forge? Oakmeadow Ford Lock? Leek Arm? etc,.

Coombes Valley is a good place for summer woodland birds, plenty of Pied Flys, not quite on the canal, so if you're tied to the canal its no good. Also try Swallow Moss on the North Staffs moors is a good place to check out. Also you could try Terrys own Dimmingsdale, i always see good birds around there.

Thanks very much Dwayne

Sincere thanks Dwayne. Will have the car - using the boat more as a base (belongs to a relative, thankfully) - so will be able to visit Swallow Moss, Coombes Valley and Dimmingsdale. Great suggestions - just what I needed.

Cheers

Cheers Terry. Where would be a good place to park and get on to the disused railway line?

Hi David,

You would be best parking at the bottom of the large bank at Oakamoor, in the car park with the grassy field near there. As you come into Oakamoor from Cheadle, you drop down a huge bank, it winds round and as you reach the bottom turn right, and the parking area is on your left 100m down or so. From there walk over the grassy area, cross the bridge and follow the track to your right, following the left of the river, this runs all the way to Denstone, and Ramblers Retreat is nicely placed 1/2 way along for a stop to have coffee etc. The area around Ramblers is Dimmingsdale, plenty of Pied Flys around there, and other stuff, at the moment that is.

On the N Staffs moors you could get Ring Ouzel, S E Owl, Merlin and stuff like that, but you'd have to be lucky to get all, and sometimes even any of them! Also i reccommend Seven Springs on the Chase - or just any of the chase, although it might be a bit too far away. You could perhaps visit Shuboruogh whilst you're there, and see the infamous Belted Kingfisher spot!!!! Also in that area you've got Blithfield Reservoir, and nearer Stoke, Park Hall CP, which is good for L E Owls.

Hope this helps

Dan

Hi i am also from Stoke,

If you need any more help with any specific birds let me now as i am motorised and have plenty of birding connections in N Staffs.

If you contact me nearer the time i will send you a private e-mail with the phone number of the local WMBC birdline. It is charged at local rates and run very kindly on a non profit basis by a local Staffs birder.

Dan
Have you got this number? If not get in touch.

Good birding.

Phill

P.s

Make sure you try Staffordshire oatcakes with your favorite savoury filling- a local delicacy!!!!!!!

Brilliant, Phill. Many thanks. Will PM you for that number. I look forward to giving those oatcakes a try! (The 'plastic' ones we get in South Wales don't, I'm sure, compare to the real thing!!)

Phill,

Yes i do have the number.....we're members of the WMBC. The number i need is Birdnet number. Could you send it me via e-mail please? David same applys here if you need more specific help, just ask, although Phill's been in the game longer than me, so maybe better asking him.
