Chalcomitra amethystina kalckreuthi (Cabanis, 1878) (2 Viewers)

Well-known member
Chalcomitra amethystina kalckreuthi (Cabanis, 1878) OD here

The Eponym Dictionary of Birds claims:
Amethyst Sunbird ssp. Chalcomitra amethystina kalckreuthi Cabanis, 1878 [SII Chalcomitra amethystine kirkii]
Lieutenant von Kalckreuth (DNF) was a Prussian explorer and collector in East Africa. He was in Zanzibar (1864) and travelled with Hildebrandt (q.v.) (1876–1877).

The Key to Scientific Names
Lt. von Kalckreuth (fl. 1876) Prussian explorer, collector in East Africa with Hildebrandt (subsp. Chalcomitra amethystina).

Here he might be from

von Kalkreuth, in Obergörzig bei Meseritz

Maybe a Leonhard von Kalckreuth (in context with Alice von Kalckreuth , geb. von Wartenberg)?

This one is a toughy!

Here (attached) we can confirm he was a lieutenant but it is clear from this he was not really an ornithologist just a "sportsman".

Given his rank in 1876 I would guess a birth date in the 1850s BUT from somewhere "Eponym" says "was in Zanzibar (1864)" - anyone know where this comes from??

I think it's from reading the incorrect cache contents of this paper which on Google says "von Kalckreuth,. Zanzibar in 1864" but in the paper says "C. Cooke, in 1864, collected in Zanzibar" but happy to be proven wrong.

All this makes me suspect (as above):

August Friedrich Wilhelm LEONHARD von Kalckreuth
Born: August 26, 1853, in Weißensee;
Death 19 Sep 1927 Weißensee, Poland

Not sure there is anything in his death certificate to confirm?

Son of Leonhard Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Gustav von Kalckreuth, auf Weißensee, Kurzig etc. and HENRIETTE Louise von Kalckreuth
Husband of ALICE Henriette Emilie von Kalckreuth

His marriage certificate (attached) shows he was living in Obergörzig bei Meseritz thus there seems a good chance he was the man in the Die Vogelwelt membership list.

Weißensee (Weissensee) = current Chycina.
Obergörzig = current Gorzica.
Meseritz = current Międzyrzecz.
(See this -- click the map, then "Toggle Historical Map".)

"Obergörzig, Kreis Meseritz" is where he resided (both certificates), and also where he died "in seiner Wohnung" (death certificate).

Just in case this might be useful to identify him in other sources: his status/activity in the death certificate are given as:
Rittergutsbesitzer = manor owner (also in the marriage certificate)
Königliche Kammerherr = Royal Chamberlain
Rechtsritter des Johanniterordens = Right knight of the Order of St. John

Apparently a Premierleutnant S. von Kalckreuth wrote an account entitled "Reise-Erlebnisse in Ost-Afrika" in a Magazine called Export. It was on page 104 of the 1880 edition. Export was the "Organ des Centralvereins für Handelsgeographie und Förderung deutscher Interessen im Auslande" Most editions are on the Internet Archive but I can't find 1880. A job for the internet sleuths.

Maybe to get from one of this libraries here? But he here he might have lived in Berlin Kurfürstenstr. 42 in 1877. Could be that he was Lieutnant im Garde-Füsilier-Regiment acoording here

If with an C. it could be Carl von Kalckreuth here. Him here? But there seems as well a Carl Friedrich von Kalckreuth.

Death 6 Marz 1912 (I think)
The first part of the added block of text is awful to read, but in the last 5 lines, I see "Lieutenant Karl Heinrich Arthur von Kalckreuth und der Bertha Hedwig Gustava Friederike von Kalckreuth geborenen Rée geschieden worden." -- this is about a divorce, not about his death. (I think it happened on 13 Feb 1912 -- 6 Mar 1912 being the date at which the text was added on this form.)

Could be that he was Lieutnant im Garde-Füsilier-Regiment acoording here
This "v. Kalckreuth, Lieutenant im Garde-Füsilier-Regiment" became a member of the Gesellschaft für Erdkunde zu Berlin in 1875.
Hildebrandt is also mentioned a number of time in the Abhandlungen of this society -- in particular, we find:
  • here : excerpts from letters sent by Hildebrandt in 1876 to Berlin, where von Kalckreuth is also mentioned;
  • here : a text from 1877 by Hildebrandt about his voyage in Africa, where Lieutenant von Kalckreuth is also mentioned (an English translation of this piece was also published: here).
Unfortunately, I see no clear indication that the von Kalckreuth met by Hildebrandt in Zanzibar in 1876 was a member of the Gesellschaft für Erdkunde, hence in principle the Gesellschaft member could just be a namesake.

I'm not 100% convinced either that Carl Heinrich Arthur and the von Kalckreuth who was a Gesellschaft member were the same person.
On the marriage record, Carl Heinrich Arthur was "Lieutenant im Kaiser Franz Garde-Grenadier-Regiment N°2", thus not "im Garde-Füsilier-Regiment".
Also, in the Abhandlungen of 1879 (the year of the marriage) here the Gesellschaft member had become "Lieutenant im 2. Oberschlesischen Infanterie Regiment No 23. in Neisse".

Thanks for your interpretations Laurent - I am afraid until someone finds the "Reise-Erlebnisse in Ost-Afrika" (in post # 5) then we can only guess at Lt von Kalckreuth's true name and dates. All minor nobles of the Prussian and German Empires were essentially "cannon fodder" and thus I count at least 14 different von Kalckreuth's active in the armies during the late 19th c ranging in rank from Lt to Field-Marshal.

I am wondering as well if the article mentioned here Erlebnisse auf einer Reise von Massûa in das Gebiet der Afar und nach Aden or Ausflug von Aden in das Gebiet der Wer Singelli-Somalen may help.

Papers by Hildebrandt, mentioned in Detsche Biographie, in; Zeitschrift der Gesellschaft für Erdkunde zu Berlin, (all in German):

1873
• Ausflug in die Nord-Abessinischen Grenzländer im Sommer 1872 (here)

1875
• Erlebnisse auf der Reise von Massûa in das Gebiet der Afer und nach Aden (here)
• Ausflug von Aden ins das Gebiet der Wer-Singelli-Somalen und Besteigung des Ahl-Gebirges (here)

1876
• Naturhistorische Skizze der Comoro-Insel Johanna (here)

1879
• Von Mombasa nach Kitui (here)

1880
• West-Madagaskar: Reiseskizze von ... (here)

1881
• Skizze zu einem Bilde central-madagassischen Naturlebens im Frühling (here)

Enjoy!

And, good luck finding Herr von Kalckreuth ...🙄

Sorry to reopen this old thread, ... even if maybe, probably superfluous, as Jobling's Key today (fully) explain this eponym as:
kalckreuthi
Lt. August Friedrich Wilhelm Leonhard Ritter von Kalckreuth (1853-1927) Prussian Army, explorer, collector in East Africa with Hildebrandt (Paul Scofield in litt.) (subsp. Chalcomitra amethystina).

But ... Paul (or James), how sure are you about this claim? As far as I can tell (from post #2, ... and onwards, to post #5... #7 ... #9) there seems to remain some doubts. Or have someone found more than what's been shown in this thread alone (alt. off-BirdForum) ... ?!?

Either way, simply following from what little was told in the OD (in post #1, also see Cabanis's "Cinnyris (Chalcomitra) Kalckreuthi Cab. n. sp.", here, on p.227, in the same JfO – even if nothing much was added)) ... however, maybe the Reisegefährten Herrn von Kalkreuth, ...could be Herr (and Oberstleutnant) Siegfried von Kalckreuth (as mentioned in the following German texts; here, alt. here, or here) ... ?

🧩

Or simply not?

In 1877 this particular Siegfried von Kalckreuth seems to have married a Marie von Krüger (1854–1882), thought, probably not (von) "Kriiger" (as it's been written in some Genealogy texts), daughter of Ferdinand von Krüger and his wife Bertha (née Jentsch).

🧩

If of any help/use?

Björn

PS. Disclaimer: I haven't found any direct link (none what-so-ever) between that particular guy, and "J. M. Hildebrandt".

I assume you need to know German to figure out who the proper Mr von Kalckreuth truly was.

As well, see here. Or/Alt. here (also he a "preußischer Oberstleutnant)" ... ?

Either way, good luck pinpointing him (if there still are any doubts).

Here “Die” Thierwelt Ost-Afrikas und der Nachbargebiete as well mentioned von Kalckreuth in context with Johann Maria Hildebrandt (1847-1881). Of course birds are also named for Hildebrandt.

Hildebrandt's Francolin Pternistis hildebrandti Cabanis, 1878
Hildebrandt's Starling Lamprotornis hildebrandti Cabanis, 1878
Johann Maria Hildebrandt (1847–1881) was a German botanist and explorer who collected and travelled in Arabia, East Africa, Madagascar and the Comoro Islands (1872–1881). He was also interested in languages and (1876) published Zeitschrift für Ethiopia, which deals with the vocabularies of dialects in the Johanna Islands. He died in Madagascar of yellow fever. His father, who was a painter and entomologist, named a beetle after him. Additionally, three reptiles, two mammals and an amphibian are named after him.

Dr Johann Maria Hildebrandt (1847-1881) German zoologist, collector in tropical Africa and Madagascar 1872-1881 (‡Aepyornis, syn. Euplectes axillaris zanzibaricus, syn. Lagonosticta rubricata ugandae, Lamprotornis, syn. Lamprotornis shelleyi, Pternistis)

So no doubt the correct man and in first link or simalar Deutsche Biographie - Hildebrandt, Johann Maria it is written:
Johann Maria Hildebrandt , geboren in Düsseldorf am 19. März 1847 , gestorben in Tananarivo auf Madagaskar am 30. Mai 1881
Apart is also honored in plants The Names of Plants
Hildebrandtia Vatke OD v. 14 1876 - Journal of botany, British and foreign - Biodiversity Heritage Library
Will not list all the hildebrandtii plants as they are really a couple of them.

No birds:

P.S. I do not think he was a doctor Dr.

P.P:S. Regarding Siegfried von Kalckreuth Björn seems to be right if I see Pförtner Stammbuch 1543-1893 zur 350jährigen Stiftungsfeier der königlichen Landesschule Pforta
