canon powershot A480 (1 Viewer)

Hi Kevin, I think there are similar camera's to this in use certainly the A95 is popular also A590 and IS. These camera's have a number of features desirable for digiscoping and are good camera's, but there are better camera's out there. I have the A590IS but have not tried digiscoping yet. Is there anything in particular you wanted to Know?

Hi Peter, What do you mean by the size of sensor and zoom? What size are you suggesting? thanks Kevin

I am by no means an expert on this but the sensor...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_sensor

... size determines how much light is gathered by the camera. Since the exit pupil (the size of the beam of light that leaves the eyepiece of the scope) is generally very small a large sensor would be pointless as it would lead to an image with a lot of vignetting. Generally speaking some vignetting can occur but can be removed by zooming the camera, however since:
total magnification = magnification of the camera x magnification of scope, high magnification cameras lead to dark images with too high magnification. I think most people either only magnify the camera by approx 2x to remove vignetting or else they do not magnify at all. The A590IS I have has a sensor size of 1/2.5" you do not want a camera that has a larger sensor than this nor do you want a camera with a zoom larger than 4x (as previously mentioned). Hope this answers your questions. There are some real digiscoping experts out there that have tried a lot of cameras and these guys are probably the best to ask. but I hope I've managed to help in some way, good luck hope you find what you want,

Pete
