Canon 80D? (1 Viewer)

Does anyone have any thoughts on the new 80D for bird photography and in particular bif?
Thanks
Sean

It looks like it could be a really good choice, especially in our country where the biggest struggle is usually the light. It is supposed to be really good in low light so I am going to either go with the 80D next or the 7D2.

The 80D is being delivered now in some countries so actual real life photographs should be turning up and then a decision can be made but it looks promising and I almost ordered a grey import last night as I could have had it inside 48 hours but decided to wait.

This camera could be the best camera going for birds in flight without taking on another mortgage, time will tell.

We need to wait for user reports but the 80D certainly has the potential to be a very capably wildlife camera. My concern is how the AF will stack up vs the 7D2, if the 80D is close then (with it's new sensor) it may well be a very good/best choice for many.

From Dpreview:

"There's also the EOS 7D Mark II, Canon's top tier APS-C camera. It offers features generally associated with more pro-level cameras like Intelligent Tracking and Recognition (which the 80D does not). And while the 7D Mark II is priced higher than the 80D, it is interesting to note that the 80D uses a newer sensor that we've found offers much better dynamic range than previous Canon cameras, including the 7D II."

The 80D seems quite tempting to me, if the noise at high ISO is better than the 7D MkII.

Anyone got an 80D yet? I want to upgrade from my 7D and mainly like shooting birds in flight but also take video and want wifi and a flippy screen. I know that a 7Dii is the logical upgrade for BIF but the 80D seems more versatile. I guess what I mainly want to know is if, shooting with the 400/5.6, the 80D will be significantly better that my 7D for BIF in terms of focus. If so then I will probably get one...
Thanks
Sean

here is a review where noise can be compared:

From the review:
"To my eyes, the 80D is the new APS-C EOS class leader, or very close to it, in regards to noise levels, though the differences alone are not likely to generate an urge to upgrade from any of the above-compared models. The difference from some older models will make upgrading very attractiv"

Nice review by the way

It's superficially tempting but... A mate has the 70D but he thinks the 80D is not sufficiently "distanced" from it to temp him into upgrading. Also from what I've seen the body-only price isn't that much removed from the 7D2. The 7D2 is also advertised as having a weather-sealed body which (by omission in the advert blurb) the 80D may not have. That and features such as 10fps (compared with 7fps on the 80D - no change over the 70D there) means that - if I ever have the money! - I'd probably go for the 7D2.

The 80D is weather sealed,
the 7DII do have a more advanced AF-system,

the IQ of the 80D is rated better than the 7DII in this review

for sport and wildlife the 7DII is recommended in this review
(80D lacks spot AF...)

But to me the IQ is as important
so I think it's a tough choice.

Probably would wait for a 7DIII with the new sensor.

It's funny. This thread, 2 or 3 years ago would have generated pages and pages of debate. Barely a ripple now. increased popularity of smartzooms perhaps? Anyway, don't let me distract from the main theme of the thread. Just an observation.

Maybe it's just that it's something broadly similar to the 7d2, for a roughly similar price, that it's not getting people too excited. I like the idea of better dynamic range, but I still think the 7D2 is the better choice for bird photography.

The DPReview review is indeed discouraging for BIF which is quite disheartening - but the reviewer didn't do much tinkering with the AF settings so perhaps a wildlife photographer would have more success. I'm still waiting to see real examples...

Just as I was about to order a 7d mark ii, it's got a bit complicated. I think, as a wildlife photographer, it will still be the 7D but it's not the 'no-brainer' that it was.

Yes I agree - however - I made my decision last weekend. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow an 80D and 7D Mark II for the day and decided on the 7D Mark II. The speed and accuracy of the AF was stunning, Also, the ease of use thanks to the lever, the joystick and the AF "cases", as well as the configurability were clinchers too. Had lots more keepers from it.

Real world image quality was basically indistinguishable. A pro shooter said to me, "If your hobby is taking photos of black cats in a coal bunker the 80D would win" because of the quality of the blacks, but beyond that there's very little in it.

As someone who takes quite a few insects shots, the articulated screen, which would remove the need to lay flat on my face so often, would have been a great addition to the 7D. I certainly use it quite often for macro work on my superzoom. But I suspect when I make this weekend's order, to replace my battered 7D, it will be the mark ii.

I'm totally torn as I will probably get a lens and body so am not really restricted to Canon as I only have one lens. Am loth to give up on my trusty 400/5.6 but in this situation I could go for Nikon D500 and 200-500... Would prefer to stay with Canon but not hearing great things about the 80D AF and really do want a screen which moves...
