Canon 500mm lens hood locking nut (1 Viewer)

For sometime the locking nut on the lense hood for my 500mm F4 has been attached by only one screw and it has become increasingly wobbly on the lens. Today it gave up the ghost and the locking nut is now unusable, part of the internal mechanism has also given way.

From looking around on the internet it doesn't seem that easy a solution to solve. Thought I could simply get a replacement part and done and dusted but it seems Canon don't sell spare parts and to possible have this 'fixed' I would have send it away and would possible cost a lot of money.

Is there any suggestions around getting a replacement part or an alternative

If its all come apart how about a small bolt the right length that fits the thread ? then glue the knurled silver bit to the bolt head ,you might have to file it down to make it fit but it should work and would look the same from the outside .

Just have to make sure when the bolt is screwed in it hits the lip or goes in the slot were the proper blade went in .

Steve, this happened to me - one of those tiny screws gave way and the whole thing started to go loose. I photographed the hood in close up, drew arrows on my photo showing what part I needed, and sent it to Canon CPS, who sent me, next day, for free, the screw I needed. I expect that even if you couldn't get the parts from them for free, you could send it in to Canon and it wouldn't cost that much at all - less than £100 I expect.
Cheers
Jonathan

The blade that extends onto the lens from the hood/locking nut is impossible to attache as the thread has sheared off. What I've done is attach a screw, cut to size, to the end which the blade would sit. I've used some industrial super strenth glue as superglue just wasn't up to the job. I now have to wait about 24hours whilst it sets to see if it has worked.

If it does then I will glue the locking nut housing back on to the hood and that should do it. If it doesn't I will have to get a replacement part, the whole housing which from searching other forums would come to about £70..

Fingers crossed my attempts of a DIY fixer upper job works..

cheers

Recently I had a similar problem with my 300mm F2.8. The complete locking mechanism is available from Colchester Camera Repair service (http://camera-repair.co.uk/) but the part is quite expensive.
Please note: there are two screws that secure the hood locking mechanism to the hood. The idiot who built my hood had put Locktite on the theads so the screws were impossible to remove! Therefore I had to grind off the heads of the screws with a Dremel tool to remove the hood locking mechanism! Go carefully and you will not do any damage. You will then need two new screws to secure your new hood lock - they are NOT included. I am not certain what thread they are but I used two screws for mounting Stero cartridges (from vinyl record days) which are a perfect fit.
If you need any further info PM me - I may still have a few suitable screws lying around which you are welcome to.

I rang Colchester Camera yesterday and the part will cost £66.66 and then there's postage on top of that.....

i have tried the gluing of a part to thread which on each occaision was totally rock solid until I had refastened each time to the hood and actually used when it then broke off, each time :(

I'me now using some nuts, bolts and washers with a wing nut to tighten and untighten to attach the lens to the hood. It works but i have to be careful not to lose the nut from the underside and have placed tape along the rim of the lens to minimise damage or scoring caused by the bolt (not yet found a 4mm nylon screw/bolt). It holds very firmly.

I will get a replacement part from Canon but given its just after Christmas cash is a little scarce.

Also I didn't know the screws didn't come with the replacement part, I'd have to make sure I get them when I get it

many thanks

PM me before you buy Canon screws or visit your local (Quality) HiFi shop.
