Looks like Cabela's is going to have a couple new binocular offerings:

One is referred to as the Intrepid HD and is a 10x42 that is a Cabela's branded by Vortex unit, retail $800.

The other is referred to as the Intensity HD and is available in 8x42, 10x42, and 12x50, retail $190 to $230. And there is an Intensity HD compact available in 8x25, 10x25, 12x25, retail $150-$170.

No other info.....

Its going to get harder for other brands to get shelf space in Cabela's stores. Not that it was ever easy. For sure store managers will be targeted not only on sales but rate of inventory turn and the keeping of inventories within agreed limits. Any new product wanting to come in probably means some previously stocked product going out.

I've noticed the very thing you've mentioned Lee. In Cabelas Ft Worth TX a guy used to be able to look over several models from Z, L, SW, many Nikons, many Vortex, etc, and nowadays the display is dominated by Vortex, Nikon, and Swaro.

I was told that the Cabelas/Meopta OEM contract was expiring BTW. If true, I would expect Meopta to bring out their own meostar 8x32HD.

I can tell you that the Meopta/ Cabelas relationship is not going away anytime soon. There some things changing but it will remain intact, I'm not sure on the future of the 32mm HD?

You are correct, Lee nailed it. As time passes there is more and more focus on turn and profit per X space measurement. The brands you listed are what is selling, unfortunately that makes it hard to turn the tide and expose lesser performing brands in an effort to increase their sales. The problem I see is that, especially in the US market, buying decisions are dictated by strong marketing strategies instead of product performance...

If you could turn something in the outdoor industry over 6 times without making customers mad you would be quite the hero! That's the reason though, especially when the're taking up retail space in a very expensive store. Online is where you are going to see assortment, more and more that is coming directly from the manufacturer if you order...

Here... here... AGREE!!!!!

I've been noticing the same with both Bass Pro and Cabela's. Much more house brands and less and less of the wide variety which included high end, especially applies to optics/binoculars, but no doubt other departments such as firearms and closing down the gun room/library.... ouch!!!

Management thinks they got it under control; but they are well on their way to diminishing themselves to Kmart status of not too long ago.

Let's see... Kmart, Dave Cooks went that way, so did Garts now known as Sports Authority, Gaylan's did the same, and Dick's is doing it too.... look where they all ended up or are on their way to ending up... or should I say just ending!

It eventually dwindles to no compelling reason to go there... and then it is chapter 11/13.

Unfortunately, us consumers lose.....

JG and W-NE

I am sure Meopta has ambitions to grow in Europe so wouldn't be at all surprised to find changes in their agreement with Cabelas that allow Meopta to sell more HD models over here.

While we can wish that these big stores would stock a wider variety of brands, they really are under pressure from internet sales.
On the other hand the possibility of walking into one of these stores to physically pick up and handle product is the one advantage these stores have over website stores.

Jan,
Is that for stock items?
Are you saying 100 or 3?

What I am saying is that a shop with 50,000 units of currency stock should if possible have a 300,000 currency unit turnover p.a.
Some items will sell better than others, and some have better profitability.

Problems in the U.K. are excessively high business rates. Iniquitous car parking charges in town centres deterring customers, and rents that are not low. Then there is shoplifting etc. Maybe 4% lost before you even begin.
So many high streets are failing except for multiples.
If the doors are open in winter then high fuel costs.

I have seen people go into the back of a shop, steal a valuable item. Then apprehended by a staff member, ex army, police called. But nothing could be done because he had not left the shop.

On another occasion I saw a young man who took clothes on hangers from a charity shop, he sprinted 300 metres to a bus and got on. He should have been in our Olympic team he was so fast.

Further. Someone bought a £1,000 T.V. with a credit card. Staff were suspicious enough to retain the card, as the 'buyer' was clearly not the card owner, who happened to be in care. The 'buyer' was desperate to return the card he had nicked.
This sort of thing happens daily, and clever staff develop a sixth sense.
Thankfully, I was not in the retail trade.

Dick Turpin or his successor is alive and well in the U.K.

6 times for the Bushnell stock is piece of cake, but you're right; complete Swaro stock in triple numbers would be my (and I bet Swaro's) wet dream. Triple numbers in sold Swaro items is piece of cake.

In the past we had two hit and runs for our stock and I won't count these:-C

The charity shop numbers here are very high, because some don't pay rent and pay half business rates maybe.
They take the empty failed retail shops.
So strings of charity shops and restaurants, fast food, phone shops and betting shops etc. All the useful shops have gone. We can't be a poor country considering how busy betting shops are.
Some charity shops are supported by companies or interested individuals, but there is enormous waste and crazy pricing. Sometimes way high, sometimes way low.
I have seen stuff thrown on the tip that makes me almost cry at the waste.

A local charity shop found £2,000 in a donated jacket, but didn't know who handed it in, so it went to charity.
I got the almost mint 16x56 wonderfully made Hensoldt for £20 and an excellent 8.5x44 Swift for £15.
I have tried to stop buying unless the binos are really good or crazy bargains.

Watch out Bin, or you end up like me having a museum full of nice old stuff and a "museum" filled with modern goodies;)

I got to fool around with this Cabelas/Vortex offering in 10x42 at Cabelas Ft Worth. Let's just say I was underwhelmed with the offering, and don't understand it. The Viper HD is brighter, sleeker, and has better ER than this new beast.
