Buzzard Calls (1 Viewer)

Standing in my parents' garden in Baldock the other day I heard the call of buzzards. I looked up and saw 3 buzzards circling, more or less over the town, and the calling continued. My dad asked me 'Why are they calling?'

I found I couldn't really answer. I mumbled something about contact calls, but realised that so many basic things about birds I cannot answer. I could answer why various other birds sing, but why the circling buzzards are calling, I don't know.

Assuming that this is probably a very obvious thing, I'd be glad if someone could put me out of my ignorance.

Buzzard often call toe each other, particularly pairs between each other. Whenever there are three buzzards, usually only two of them are calling as they are a pair. I have never understood the need for the third buzzard. One time I saw three buzzards circling while riding my bike, then one of them flew low over me and gave a horrible ear piercing shriek. The only other time I've heard that horrible noise was when three crows were attacking a buzzard, possibly the same one. Again it flew quite low. Perhaps it is a distress call, but if you ask me it just makes others distressed as well!
