but it LOOKS like a hummingbird! (1 Viewer)

I live in Bulgaria. Twice, in two very different locations, I had sighting of a very small (three inches max in length), all-grey creature with a very narrow, pointed body and I swear looked nothing at all like a hummingbird both--no colors, no antennae. I realize it cannot be a hummingbird, but what ELSE can it be?

Hi Molly,

And welcome to Bird Forum. It could be a hummingbird hawkmoth. Did it look a bit like this:

Actually I just realised that you probably meant to say that it looked nothing like a hummingbird moth! (I think). There aren't any birds in your area that would look a lot like a hummingbird - the only things similar in size would be Goldcrest or Firecrest. They sometimes hover a bit when feeding, but not really like a hummingbird. There are Sunbirds, which do look quite a bit like hummers but none are found in Europe.

Hi Molly,

A warm welcome to BirdForum from all the Admin and Moderators.

I agree with Andrew - Hummingbird Hawkmoth seems likely. These are wonderful moths, but we have not seen any this year - unlike last year when we had several in our garden in the very hot weather.

Hi Molly and welcome to Birdforum from all the Moderators and Admin. Staff.
I have to agree with Andrew, in that your description can be of nothing other than a Hummingbird Hawkmoth.
