Brazil Nuts (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Following on from my Nuthatch question, I mentioned that I had made a feeder (of sorts!) out of a log and forced Brazil nuts into the holes I'd drilled - see attached photo.

Well, I am now wondering whether the birds I had in mind (Blue Tits, Great Tits, Nuthatch) will actually eat Brazil nuts, as nothing has touched the ones in the log since I put it in place on Sunday evening.

Today I even liquidise some more Brazil nuts (no large pieces) and put them on the top of the log, with the idea of generating some interest in this new feature - but nothing has even approached it!

Perhaps I am being impatient, or, is it possible the birds won't eat them?

Any thoughts welcome.

Julian.

I'd be surprised if Nuthatch and Great Spotted Woodpecker didn't have a go at drilling them out, and tits might have a peck at them too. Might just be the time of year. It's the quietest period now, in fact I've given up for the moment since so little was coming in. I'll start again in September when birds are stocking up for the winter.

Hi Clive,

Thanks for reply.

As far as bird activity in my garden; I still have lots of birds about, in fact the last 3 weeks have been the busiest since I put up my feeders 2 months ago.
I currently have adults and juveniles in the following species: Blue Tits, Great Tits, Chaffinches, Greenfinches, Goldfinches, Robins, Blackbirds and have recently had a few visits from a Nuthatch.
I have also had a Green Woodpecker (see attached photo) visit to eat the ants in our lawn, but no Great Spotted Woodpeckers so far.

To update the Brazil nut situation, nothing has touched the ones in the holes, but something (avian or mammal) has had a go at the chopped ones on top of the log - but can't say whether they ate any?

Oh well, I will probably end up drilling them out myself and filling the holes with fat or suet! :)

My birds LOVE LOVE LOVE brazil nuts. I mix raw virginia peanuts and brazil nuts in the nut feeder, they cannot get enough, I'm gonna go broke!! Titmice, chickadees, woodpeckers, nuthatches, all love it.

it's got to be somewhere where they're likely to find it, and feel comfortable being there, and be in the locality in any case. And it's a novel food - it can take birds months to find/use a novel food. dded to that, there is still LOTS of natural food around, so hunger is not forcing birds to be more inquisitive about new foods.

You'll probably have a lo more luck in December, although putting out food even where you know brids are is no guarantee that they'll do what they're supposed to.

Brazil nuts

I would just suggest patience with your improvised feeder looks fine to me I have been feeding from a very similar station for over two years & regularly attract Greater Spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches, blue tits, great tits & occasionally Long tailed tits to mine. May just suggest that you may need to consider a higher & more secure location.
Good Luck Pepe.
