Boars and birds in Berlin (1 Viewer)

StuartReeves

Local rarity
I'll be in Berlin for a conference next week. I might get a little time off while I'm there so I'd welcome any information on sites that are accessible by public transport that might be worth a look for Wild Boar and any interesting birds.

Thanks in advance,

Stuart

Area around Buckow - relatively near Berlin and accessible by rail, has Great Bustard and a variety of other birds. Supposed to have a viewing platform where, especally at this time of year, you can see these birds. I know no real details, however, as I haven't been there myself. BF member Albatross I think posts on this place sometimes, maybe PM him, he would better know Berlin I imagine.

Hello,

boars are e.g. in the area of forest Grunewald.
There is a street near station ( Heerstrasse. S-Bahn ) in direction of lake Teufelssee. I want this street often from Teufelsberg ( I was there for rock climbing ). When it start to get dark, boars possible to see from time to time.

Bird watching is very interesting outside from Berlin, especially now in the migration time.
But without car, combination of train and bike is recommended.
e.g.
lake Rietzer See Streng ( near Trechwitz in direction of Brandenburg )
train Berlin -> direction Brandenburg to Goetz
and 6 km with bicycle
or try to call Lutz Manzke

crane migration area Linumer Bruch is the 2. biggest in Europe, but peak is 2. to 3. week of October e.g. 14.10.2008 87.980
- train to Nauen and 15 km bike
or guided tours from Nabu from 20.09. - 9.11.
(Tel.: 033922/50500, Fax: 033922/90838, [email protected])
but You has to ask how You can reach Linum

floodplains Elbtalauen and lake Guelper See ( petrol station for migration birds of central Europe )
train to Rathenow and about 15 km to lake but interesting areas between to

Great Bustard area Buckow near Nennhausen

Hello,

I don't live in Berlin anymore, but these should still be good:

-for boar, try Grunewald at dusk, especially around the edge of the big lake Wannsee. The most practical way by public transport might be to take the city rail S-bahn to Nikolassee and walk along Wannseebadweg and fork to one of the minor forest roads. On the lake, you might get a Red Kite or White-tailed Eagle.

For birds, it is really great when you rent a car. For a full day W of Berlin, you can see Netzen, marshy lake, full of waterbirds (geese, white-tailed eagle, cranes in hundreds). Then almost guaranteed Great Bustards near Garlitz (two hides, the west one is usualy better), see:
http://www.grosstrappe.de/info/info_tuerme.htm
with supporting cast of rough-legged buzzards, etc etc. Nearby fishponds at Linum have (well signposted) second largest roost of Cranes in Europe, amazing spectacle before dusk. A very full day, can be amazing, but unfortunately, all these bird sites are very awkward by public transport.

Thanks for the information folks. Unfortunately I had to cancel my trip to Berlin so I won't be able to take advantage of it this time around.
