Blue Tit Surprise (1 Viewer)

This morning my daughter told me she woke to find a blue tit on her bedroom windowsill - inside. It had apparently flown in through the little top window and had flapped against the larger closed window. It was the flapping noise which woke her, made her draw back the curtains and find the blue tit there. She opened the window and off it flew.

This got me wondering, how many times do birds fly inside houses? Is it a common occurence? It hasn't happened to me before, though we used to have birds fall down the chimney before we had a cowl put on.

What a surprise for your daughter Kits! Nice to have a happy ending too.

I've only had a bird come into the house once that I can remember, also a Blue tit. I had been sorting the loft one morning. Later when I went back up to turn off the light and close it I found the bird flying around. I had to quickly leave to collect my daughter from school so decided to turn off the light to keep it calm.

On returning the bird was gone. Sadly I later found it dead amongst boxes. I realised turning off the light was a mistake and must have caused it to fly into something and knock itself out. Daft decision made in haste. :-C

Wendy, just seen your post, absolutely amazing story about the Tawny Owl!! That's a close encounter you'll never forget. Thank goodness it found its way out ok.

Hi Kits,

Not many weeks ago, the landing window (fairly small and the only one on that end of the house)was open as wide as it could be. We heard the commotion from downstairs, but by the time we got there the only evidence was.....bird poo, lots of it and very wet!!! As there was no fluttering or noise from anywhere, we guessed that it had flown back out the way it came in. No idea what it was, but it took a while to clear up after it. Fortunately it was shortly before we redecorated, so the stains weren`t too much of a problem.

In our last house, which was on a farm and well off the road, we had bedroom windows that opened inwards, rather like a door. Not long after we had gone to bed, both still awake, a tawny owl flew in one window, did a circuit of the room and flew out of the other. I`m glad that we were both awake and witnessed it as I doubt that the other would have believed the story! My OH was rather concerned as he`s not keen on birds indoors!

Hi Kits,

When we moved into our Bungalow it still had 'working' fireplaces in the living rooms, even though there is central heating. After a while I took out the hearths and tiled aprons and carpetted up to the fireplace cavity. I left the surrounds and didn't block the chimneys to allow room ventilation. I covered the blank spaces with a screen in one room and a large electric fire in the other.

Down the years from time to time we hear Doves or Pigeons cooing or Jackdaws yacking up on the chimney pots but one day the sound seemed to be in the room, so I moved the electric fire a bit and there was a Wood Pigeon sitting where the hearth used to be! I reached in and grabbed it and managed to get it outdoors with only losing a handful of feathers. It survived the ordeal OK as I saw it several times in the garden picking up maize, recognisable from the bald patch.

I told my wife that I'd get grills fitted to the chimneys but I've never got round to it and every time that I hear cooing I go and check.

Bill.

Hi all,

The only thing we've had flying round the house was a bat, and that was last week!

We still don't know how it got in the house - none of the windows were open. We can only assume that it got into the loft from outside and somehow found it's way into the house. We're conducting an investigation to find out! It flew round and round the living room. We were somewhat flummoxed, as we couldn't shoo it out, nor could we catch it. We opened the largest window as wide as it would go and hoped for the best. It did get out eventually. You should have seen the state we were in. Mother was cowering on the sofa to keep away from it, and we were laughing at her, concerned for the bat, and trying to keep the cat at bay all at the same time. Phew, I needed a rest after that one! B :) B :)
