Blue Jays & Peanuts (1 Viewer)

I was thinking of getting a peanut feeder for blue jays. So far I only have a pair of jays that come to my feeder. They scare the smaller birds and make a mess spilling seed. I really love them - their colors and behavior. If I put out peanuts, will they pick up the nut and fly away with it or eat it on the spot? Thanks!

We have Steller's Jay and Western Scrub Jays where I live; both will sit and stuff down many peanuts at one sitting, seriously, until their crop is full! Then they go and probably bury they somewhere close by because before I know it, they're back for more.

Thanks for your reply! I'm in north Florida so the jays here are the regular blue jays. There are Florida scrub jays further south which are a protected species, but they don't range as far north as where I live.
I live in an apartment on the 3rd floor and have to be careful about debris falling to the balconies below. That was why I wondered if the jays will fly off with the peanut before eating it. So far that seems to be what's happening.

I just put out a whole shell peanut feeder yesterday. Haven't had any Jays visit yet though, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I recently used open feeder in TX with whole peanuts and it didn't take long for the blue jays to wipe out the supply. They swooped in, took a peanut and flew off - very few stayed very long to eat the peanuts. I kept buying the whole peanuts, but can't keep up with them. lol

Love the Blue Jays... I'm new to this and I had read that they loved peanuts so I set some out and now.....every day they expect it. I named this one dive, cause it just seems he or she always poses before taking off....

Dive looks like a happy ham, Unionjack. Have 3 fledges this year looks just like Dive. Like their peanuts no doudt. Have walnuts on hand also, gooble those up too. Have to husk first for them, or they wind up playing walnut golf. Pecans be falling shortly, they love those too.
