Blue jay that seems healthy and perky can’t fly more than a few feet (1 Viewer)

Hello,
I am hoping to get some help with a bird I found in my yard. He (not sure if male or female so I’ll say he) was struggling to get off the ground (looks like an adult to me) so I’m assuming he should be able to fly. I looked at his wings and one was slightly lower than the other. I tried to get help from a rehab place but have struggled to find somewhere. In the meantime I made an X wing wrap which stayed for a few days before he pecked it off! - I gave him a few more days in the warmth to recover (we had a lot of snow and very cold temperatures, where I had seen him shivering on the ground -hence I brought him inside to be warm with access to food and water) which he is happily eating away. Anyway, I love animals and hate to see them be put down for minor issues. I tried to let him fly in one of the spare rooms and he was slightly better but not great.. and I’m not sure if it was because it was inside a room.. basically, I want to help him heal and get him back out without him being declared a hopeless case.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Nevey

Hi there and a warm welcome to you from those of us on staff here at BirdForum (y)
We're glad you found us and thanks for taking a moment to say hello. Please join in wherever you like ;)

I know it’s the weekend but anyway you can track down a vet that could help you as to where you can take the Jay to?

Hi Nevey and a warm welcome from me too.

We have some general guidelines here for the care of injured and baby birds. It really sounds as if he is in need of professional help. Do try and contact a re-habber, they have so much experience with these sort of situations.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here; please let us know how you get on.
