Blackbird Nest Tipped over, do I help? (3 Viewers)

Hello! I’m new here but I’m desperate for some advice. I’m in Melbourne, Australia.

Outside my bedroom window is a rose bush that a pair of blackbirds have nested in. The eggs hatched about 9-10 days ago. We’ve been watching the baby birds grow and the parent birds feeding them everyday. I don’t believe the female bird is sitting on them anymore (not sure the technical term for this) and the baby birds have some feathers now.

Last night we got a lot of rain and wind in the space of an hour and it tipped the bush on an angle. The nest is now on its side with some of the babies still in the nest, but this morning I have noticed one of the babies has fallen out and is sitting below the nest in the bush. The parents are still feeding them regularly and attending the nest.

My question is do I try and fix the nest so it’s sitting upright again and put the baby back in the nest? I haven’t tried to correct the whole bush as I’m worried it’ll scare the babies and the nest will fall completely. I feel the only way to correct the nest would be to reach in there and do it myself. Or, should I just leave them alone and hope if all of the babies fall out they will survive okay with the parents looking after them?

Bird amateur here….but I have grown very fond of these blackbirds and would be very upset to see them die!! Any advice is appreciated.

Hi Giselle and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. We have some general guidelines here for the care of injured and baby birds. This should cover all your queries I think. If you do need to know anything else, please don't be afraid to ask.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.
