We see black hawks regularlt y in the mangroves and near rivers here. Some are quite large, and I am hoping to learn how to distinguish between the species. Here is a recent photo.

Solitary eagle
Apologies, it is a common black hawk. Tail length seems to be a good way to separate them.

Looks like common black hawk: single white tail-band, rather short outermost visible primary. Solitary eagle isn't coastal, is rare and difficult to see, and has a relatively long outermost visible primary.
Can you give the actual location, region, and date, please? Thanks.
