Biting midge in London (1 Viewer)

I've been bitten a few times by midges on Hampstead Heath in London. The bite is not that itchy but the mark can be quite large and last for days. They are much larger than the midges you get in the Scottish Highlands, so clearly not those. Anyone know what sort of midge they are likely to be? Garden midges?

Well I guess the Highland ones are about a millimetre long. These ones are two or three millimetres.

Don't think so. I'll try to get a photo next time. I've never seen these insects anywhere else. They might even be a foreign invader given that this is London and the number of people coming and going between other countries.

I've been bitten a number of times recently in London by a Blackfly. Simulium noelleri Friederichs. It's quite small, black, with a 'humped' thorax.

No, they don't look like flies. They look quite a bit like the insect on this page http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_7000000/newsid_7009100/7009106.stm. Hope they're not carrying bluetongue.
