Hello, I am visiting Manchester from 22nd to 24th October. I am thinking about doing some birdwatching there or preferably in Liverpool, which is at the cost. Could you please give me some tips where to go? I am mainly interested in gulls and waders.

I am looking for easy access short walk. Which species could be seen there in October?

Thanks

Daniel from Czech Republic

Hi Daniel, there's a few places to choose from in both areas depending on your preferences.
Presumably, being Czech, you've seen most UK birds and are interested in things like Purple Sandpiper, Turnstone, Grey Plover, Sanderling, Knot, etc etc as u mention gulls and waders. Will you be hiring a car?..

A good place to go is Marshside Marsh RSPB - trains run direct to Southport from Manchester.

There are other good places such as the Hoylake area (not too far from Liverpool), on an incoming tide.

Mike. 🙂👍🐦

Hi Mike,

Thanks for quick reply.

Yes, exactly. These are my target birds, but I would be acommodated in Manchester and would use only trains, buses and public transport. I am not thinking about hiring a car. Just one day trip near the coast, short way from Liverpool would suit me.

Hiya, I think Hoylake would be a good option. There's quite a bit of info about the area here on Birdforum if u do a keyword search, J. Turner in particular has written a lot. It's a cool area which I don't get to visit these days as much as I'd like to. There can be huge numbers of gulls and waders at that time of year (and occasionally seabirds, in north-west gales). A telescope is useful here as birds only get in binocular range shortly before high tide.
Here's the train times from central Manchester.

Marshside Marsh RSPB has more wildfowl - Pink Footed Geese, Whooper Swans, duck, and raptors, plus gulls and Black Tailed Godwit.
If u have any questions, feel free to ask. 🙂👍🐦
