Birdwatching Magazines in the US (1 Viewer)

All,

I've seen a BF forum on Birdwatching magazines and didn't recognize any of the referenced mags (seems they were all UK).

Anyway, I've been getting Birder's World for the last year and just renewed. It's a great Mag with lots of good location and species info.

This month they have an article on Birding in Mexico and a Photo gallery of some of the birds. An interesting reason they give for the lack of popularity of Mexcio as a birdwatching destination for Americans and Canadians is that it's not included in the ABA area checklist!

Anyway, some food for thought. Can getting to count a bird on your checklist outweigh the opportunity to see some fantastic birds? Boggled my mind.

Hope to see more of y'all down here soon, the birding is great!(and the ABA is considering adding Mexico and Central America to its area so you might even be able to count the birds)!

Funnily enough although I'm in the UK I subscribe to Birder's World too - they are one of the few US birding magazines that will take subscribers from the UK. I agree that it is an excellent birding magazine with well written articles and top quality photos.

Yes, I've always been disgruntled that the Hawaiian Islands are not in the ABA area either. Birder's World is a good general birding magazine, and the ABA magazine is excellent also.

Hi Dave,

In what part of Mexico are you located? Maybe I'll visit your locale someday.

I read an excellent trip report of someone from Canada who visited Mexico. It sounds a brilliant place for birds!
I also like 'Birders' World' though I haven't bought it recently--cannot afford half the stuff I'd like to buy!

Dave, I'd love to visit Mexico someday -- my only exposure was years and years ago on a half-day in Juarez! Hardly worth mentioning.

Mexico is not yet represented in the GGBC 2 -- we'd love to have you participate! Details are in the Member's Notice Board.

Charles,
I'll have to check out the ABA magazine. Thanks for the suggestion.

Dennis,
I'm on a small Island in Campeche State, right at the start of the Yucatan Peninsula. We have several good birding areas nearby and you can also see all the Maya Ruins you ever wanted to see at the same time. Some of the more colorful birds include the Trogons / Quetzals, the Mot Mots, Jabiru (saw our first ones last fall), the Kingfishers (five species - from large Ringed to tiny Pygmy), Cuckoos, Hummingbirds of all types, Boat billed herons, Laughing Falcon, and much much more.

Beverly,
Thanks to the invitation to the GGBC II. I hadn't read about this before. I'll try and participate.

I have just purchased Birders World (100th edition) and thought it was excellent value for money (£2.25) the format reminded me of other US mags like Sky and Telescope to name one. I do like that format and level of ads but not to everyones taste I guess. Nice to see it on out news stands here, shame we don't see too many of the birds here. :-C

Mexican Birding

I've just posted a few pictures of the Black-Headed Trogon and the Green kingfisher in the Digiscope Photo Gallery for those interested in seeing a few of our local favorites.

Hi Dave. I'm in Canada, but have purchased a timeshare that allows me to trade into a few places in Mexico. The closest to your area would be the 'riviera' near Cancun, I'm guessing. How far are you from there?

Eight hours. But it is a great spot. Close to Cozumel, the Biosphere Si'an Ka, the Ruins at Chichen itza (large colony of Blue crowned MotMots breeding there), and then day trips away from Celestun (Flamingoes) and a number of other good areas.

Try it, you'll like it.
