Birdwatching in Brittany (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

I’m going to Brittany for two weeks at the beginning of July starting of near Quimper then moving on to Le Mans. I was thinking of going to the Baie d’Audierne and Trunvel which are not too far away from where we are staying. Does anyone have any suggestions for species to look out for? I was also going to keep my eyes open for Black, Middle and Grey headed Woodpecker but are they in this area? Also is there anything I should look out for around Le Mans? I was wondering if there were possible Little Bustards around there. Also is it possible to get Golden Oriole in Brittany and if so are there any tips to find them?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated,

Cheers,

Greg

Hi Greg

I don't know the geography of Brittany too well, but there's several articles in Opus on the area, have a look HERE.

Hope some of them may be of use to you.

Hi Greg,

If you''re going to travel from NW Brittany to Le Mans I'd suggest following the coastal route and calling in at the Briere N.P. in Loire-Atlantique. Birds include Bluethroat, Savi's, Whiskered Tern, White Stork, Fan-tailed Warbler, Night & Purple Heron, etc. There were Golden orioles and Bluethroats easily visible last week about 1km south of Breca (west side of Briere). Try the small track leading NW from Lonce at the south end for Whiskered and Black Tern. The coastal scrub around Penestin (see baie de Vilaine in Opus) is good for Cirl Bunting, Melodious and Dartford Warbler. Black, Middle and Lsr.-spot Woodpeckers all relatively common in Foret du Gavre north of Nantes along with Hobby & Melodious Warbler and there are a few Honey Buzzards there too. NEver birded around Le Mans so can't help you there I'm afraid. I think the bustards may be further south than Le Mans but check for info elsewhere just in case !

ATB,

Eugene
