Is there birding in Tokyo or Kyoto where I don't have to rent a car? I would only be doing it for one or two days of my trip in April 2025.

Thank you,

Cyn

There definitely is in Tokyo. Meiji Shrine is good for birding. Ueno Park is also good. Near Haneda Airport is Tokyo Wild Bird Park. All are accessible via subway / monorail.

I can't speak to Kyoto.

Kyoto is also easy to get around by public transport- train, bus and metro- I didn’t go birding there but visited tourist attractions for a day - a lot of them are very busy so not great for birding, but I’ve no doubt with eBird plus a little research on public transport you could put together a more bird-oriented itinerary.

When I was in Tokyo in 2017 I did a couple of good day trips on public transport, Oiso for green pigeon and futagoyama for Japanese paradise flycatcher on one day, then sasagawa for marsh grassbird, Japanese Reed bunting etc
Cheers
James

The week in Japan on the Round the World trip (See attached - start of April) covers a couple of sites in Tokyo and Kyoto and gives an idea of what is possible.
