Birding in Bali (1 Viewer)

I may be visiting Bali in February of 2009 but so far my attempts at searching out any information about decent birding sites have not bore fruit. I can't believe that with all the information about sites around the world on BirdForum there is none for Bali

Any information gratefully received

Cheers

In Ubud is a pub/restaurant called the Beggars Bush. Used to be run by an English birder called Victor Mason. He runs the Bali Bird Walks from the pub. The walk in the area takes about 3-4 hours from memory. Within 5 minutes a Crested Serpent Eagle flew over and whole load of Goshawks. Heres a link about Victor.

Bali Bird Walks

Theres great birds everywhere, I was flying a bird shaped kite on the beach and it was buzzed by a group of Frigate birds.

If I can think of other good spots I'll let you know. Wish I were going again.

Just above Ubud is the Sayan Terraces hotel. Little Spiderhunters were there in 2003. A pretty birdy spot. Ubud as a town is quite busy -- but always Javan Kingfishers in the nearby paddies. Further up the hill are the botanical gardens and opposite Denpasar is Ulu Watu. All are written about. We spend all our time (the last 5 years) near the Eastern tip of the island. Some nice birds ------ but overall, I personally would not say Bali can be compared with the Malay Penninsula or other more popular birding spots this side of Wallace's Line. There's been loads of trapping and also a thousand years of land use. While my bino's are always at hand, our time is mainly spent with friends and their great culture..... and in the water. The National Park in the west is worth a visit too -- as is Menjengen Island for the nice wall (snorkelling). Victor Mason is fun - as are his guides. His small book on Bali's more common birds is a great read. Have fun....

Hi there,

I'm Imam from Jogjakarta, Java. I have been doing bird watching in Bali (2006) and visiting two sites that you can visit, too. First, you can go to Serangan Island. That is the best place in Bali for shorebirds, said Victor Mason--and I have prooved it my self. You can reach the place for 15-20 minutes by motorcycle from Denpasar. You can see many waders, including Javan Plover and other waterbirds.

The second place is Nusa Penida Island. It can be reached by little boat (about 2 hours) or ferry from Sanur. In this place you can see Bali Starling in the wild that released by the Friend of the National Park Foundation (FNPF).

You can send me a PM if you need any further information.
