Birding Athens area late December (1 Viewer)

Hi,
We have a couple of days in Athens in late December and may be able to do a day's birding. Any advice on good sites close to the city and any recommendations for local birding guides would be appreciated.
Thanks Jono

Hey Jono!

Some years ago I spotted Rock partridge at the temple of Poseidon (which is a nice place anyway), a bit south east of Athens. I´ll visit Athens in late October again and might have the chance to do a little birding in between here and there. I´ll keep you informed here!

Cheers,

Fabian

Hi!

I am not able to do proper birding while being in Athens right now, but on a walk to Acropolis on the 25th of October I spotted a Barred warbler (Curruca nisoria) calling in a tree on a childrens'' playground. Definately a resting migrant though.

On the 26th I saw European shag (Gulosus aristotelis) - the Mediterranean subspecies desmarestii -, Sandwich tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis) and Audouin's gull (Ichthyaetus audounii) near Nea Makri on Marathon beach, a little north east of Athens.

So, when going out to the shores and the beaches you'll most definately see European shags hanging around somewhere, maybe a wintering Sandwich tern.

Right now the city center of Athens is full of European robin and Eurasian blackcap, propably on passage. Also, lots of Monk parakeets...

So long,

Fabian

On the 27th of October 2024 still lots of Eurasian Blackcap, European robin, Chiffchaff and Chaffinch in and around the city center of Athens. Also lots if Monk parakeet and Collared parakeet there.

While visiting the ancient site of Brauron (temple of Artemis) 40 minutes east of Athens, Cettis warbler and Sardinian warbler calling in the wetlands of Vravonos close by. Little egrets on the shore and a hovering Short-toed eagle, which shouldn't be in the area in December anymore. Little egrets should winter on the Greek shores in December, Cettis warbler can be found wherever theres reeds or some water, and Sardinian warbler should be seen/heard in any bushy or rocky surroundings, also in parks.
