Bird watching near Exmouth (1 Viewer)

Hi folks

I'm visiting a friend in Exmouth this weekend and i'm determined to go for a couple of hours birding, probably early sunday morning. I really want to try and get some sea watching done and catch some migrants before they depart over the sea.

Does anyone know of a good spot i could go without travelling too far?
I know of Exmouth local nature reserve along the exe, how good is it for waders and passerines at the moment?
I have also seen Straight point, sandy bay on the map where i was thinking of doing a bit of sea watching but it says danger area, anyone know if it's dangerous and if i can go there?

Cheers
Gareth

Ok, I have searched the forum thoroughly and have found lots of interesting info.
I have a short list of three places to go, hopefully i'll get to do them all (i'll see how it goes).
Obvious one is Bowling green marsh, next is further down at Exmouth LNR, and the one i'm most likely to do is the coastal path from exmouth to straight point in the search of migrants and a bit of sea watching.

Will report how i get on!

Gareth

Hi Gareth,

You should do okay at Bowling Green Marsh if you time it during high tide. Exminster Marshes on the other side of the river should be worth a look too. Dawlish Warren on the other side of the river mouth (got to drive up river then back down) will also be a good place to bird. To your east there is the Otter Estuary at Budleigh Salterton as well. Aylesbeare Common to the north east on a fine day should offer the possibility of seeing a Dartford Warbler. Reading an OS map and picking out an accessible spot on the coast should provide some migrants hopefully.

There are some spots in Exmouth worth checking, namely the river off the railway/bus station and Mudbank Lane. If you can not find anything on these places then say so and I will give more info.

Hope you have some decent birds.

Cheers,
Andrew.

If you can get to Dawlish Warren when the tides out and watch it come in you would be in for a treat, great birding

Unfortunately my birding plans went t!ts up this weekend.
Thanks fot the tips thoguh guys.

I did get to do a bit of bird watching from the train on the way to exeteron saturday, but the tide was out and the small waders too far away to id.
I took a walk along the coastal path from exmouth to straight point sunday morning, but went late morning as i didn't go to bed early enough and was beaten by the dog walkers. Got a couple of Chiffchaffs, c15 Swalows around the cows and some flocks of linnets. Out to sea were shags, 9 Common scoter and a single shearwater too far out to id.
Was going to go to Bowling green marsh on my way home sunday afternoon and didn't, then read there was a garganey there, a bird i havn't caught up with this year....

Damn....
