Bird of Prey - Azores (1 Viewer)

Can anyone help out this member with the ID of a bird of prey seen in the Azores.

Photo is in the Gallery.

Looks like maybe a young Common Buzzard to me but I'm not familiar with Azores birds - nor that many large BoP species for that matter!

Common Buzzards are very common in the Azores, Ian. When we were there we saw up to 30 at a time. We didn't see any other species of raptor. The name Azores comes from Kites because that's what the sailors who discovered the islands thought they were. A young Portuguese ornithothogist told me that the locals still look at you blankly if you talk about Buzzards and persist in calling them Kites.
