HI!

I am very interested in the common names of birds in different languages. I collect lists in different languages.

I would ike to know if people could help me with this. I have list for most of the European languages. But I would still like to know where I can get lists of especially the Celtic languages and non-European languages.

Thank you!

Hi there Trencalos,
Try and get hold of a copy of 'A Field Guide to the Birds of Britain & Europe' by Peterson, Mountfort & Hollom, ISBN Number 0-00-219073-7

This book has the common names in English, Dutch, French, German and Swedish of most of the European birds.

Have a copy of "Birds of Ireland" which has many of the Irish names, if you're interested in Celtic languages. PM if you'd like a list of 50 or 60. Will be away for the next couple of days.

EMAIL me if you want Welsh, Slovene or Russian.

Likewise, if you have a longer Slovene or Russian list than me, I might steal yours!

(Slovene or Russian I can provide rather quickly in spreadsheet format... Welsh - limited to Welsh recorded species - will take longer as I would have to copy it down from a book.)

Hi,
I have an old book somewhere that gives local British variations of many common british birds. The book was published in the 1880s. A number of these names could be old Scottish, Welsh or Irish names. Let me know if you would like to send some to you.
