Sorry - new to all this - not sure which thread to use but here goes.

My husband is a keen birdwatcher and we will be going to Madeira for the first time in May. It is his birthday next week and I thought a good present would be a birdwatching guide to Madeira - but I am so confused about which to get!!!!!!!!!

Complete novice myself so any advice would be much appreciated. We also go to Tenerife - is there a book out there which covers both - yes I know I'm cheap but credit crunch and all that.

Thanks in advance

I recommend you the Field Guide to the Birds of the Atlantic Islands by Tony Clarke. It covers Madeira and Tenerife and it's written by a local expert:
Amazon link.
He has also written a site guide for the Canaries: Prion Birdwatchers' Guide to the Canary Islands
Amazon link
but this book is only for the Canaries, not for Madeira.

A good website for information is http://www.madeirabirds.com/

Agree with the above. The field guide includes sites and the site guide is quite old now, though there is another site guide for Tenerife which is a bit more up to date.

Have been to Tenerife birding and live in Blackpool so drop me a line if you need anything else.

Stephen.

Many thanks for the information in your post. I'm planning to go on holiday to Madeira in early June, so this will be very helpful in alerting me to what I might see.
