Baby bird fell out of the nest... (1 Viewer)

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I have a baby brown thrasher that I discovered on the ground. He had pecked a small oak leaf and speared it causing his beak to be clamped shut. I got the oak leaf off, but he does not seem to know how to fly. There are 4 brown thrashers, 2 cardinals, 2 mockingbirds, and a red-headed woodpecker in the tree beside him making all kinds of noise and swooping down and flying back up. He has feathers on his side wings, but is just starting to get his back feathers in. Do you think he can fly? :h?: I tried placing him in a tree about 5 foot up, but he immediately jumped to the ground without trying to fly. Is there anything that I can do for him before dark gets here?

Hi Melody and a warm welcome to you from the entire staff here at BirdForum.

If there are no problems with neighborhood cats, I would strongly suggest you put the bird back where you found it. This is the time of year when parents will literally shove the babies out and feed them on the ground or the nest is just too small and the fledglings fall out. Either way, the parents do a pretty good job of keeping an eye on them and feeding them.

Hi Melody, Do you know how the baby bird is today. I know how you must feel. We feel like we need to do something to help, but will our help hurt more than it will help. Give us an update.

I took KC's advice and left him where he was. The parents coaxed him over to a large oak tree. He was under that tree last night when I checked. This morning he was not there. I hope that he made out okay, but I suspect something may have got him. I really hate the thought of that as he was so cute (except when he had that beak stuck in the leaf, then he was pitiful).
