Baby Barn Swallows need to learn to fly!!! (1 Viewer)

Hi, I'm new here and really need some help!!

When we sold our horse trailer, we found a barn swallow nest in it that had 4 babies. I removed the babies hoping I could adopt them into some other nests but there was a big size difference. I have since learned that I may have been able to relocate the nest- next time!!

So, its been 2.5 wks and in that time I did lose the 2 smaller babies but the other 2 look great! The only problem is, they don't want to fly! They were flapping their wings last wk but now they don't. I even "fly" them around the living room and nothing happens. I have had them for 17 days and they were over a wk old when I removed them. They "should" be flying!

They live in a pail filled to the top with grass clippings so they can see out and poop over the edge. I feed them wet cat food and have started to put them on a paper towel and place dead/crawling flies on it for them to pick up. I try to put them outside, up high so they can see the swallows fly over them. Today, I put them in a tree, told them it was "tough love" and to start flying. They were perched there, doing nothing, until the wind came up and blew one down. K, back to the house.

What more can I do?? Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

Thanks!!

Hello Hendr', welcome to the forum

Simply turn the birds over to a properly credentialed Canadian based rehabber. Those animals are neo-tropical migrants. If there is any hope for them at all, it would be with a professional that may be able to integrate them in with other barn swallows. If there is such a facility. At a large web site in the US, so many complaints have been made within US jurisdiction, that it has the attention of US wildlife law enforcement.

Thanks Bird Bill! I did put a call in late yesterday to a rehabber. I'm not sure if there is a place that will take them in. I just want them to survive, they are SOOO close!! Just need to fly and hunt which are the hardest things to "teach."
