There's only been one Smew recently-their much more common at Thorpe. Last seen the drake Smew was on the main reserve at the Scott hide. There is a Goosander that can be seen from the Hanson hide (there are usually many more), and a Common scoter was seen on the 31st at Denge Marsh.
The Long-tailed duck has not been reported since the 30th.

That just goes to show how shocking this winter has been for ducks. I wonder, if this cold weather hadn't happened, if a peak count of 3 would have made this the worst winter on record for Smew at Dungeness?
Smew at Dunge can be fairly mobile at times. Scan all the water areas and keep an eye on flying birds! For safety's sake please do not try and view from the causeway! The road is heavily populated by boy racer wannabes.
