Hi,
I'm curious if anybody can help identify a bird that sounds like it's saying "Jerry." I hear it just about every morning. I'm located in New Jersey.
Thank you.

Greetings Kat33:

More description would be useful:

-are the "jerry" calls separate, or does it give a series?
-if it repeats, how quickly?
-what's the tone like? Pure, rough, slurred, ascending, descending, flat?
-what's the habitat like, around your place?

Thankee,

@bkrownd...ha! No, it's definitely not saying "Jersey".

The call sounds like a sharp "Jear-ry" The bird will repeat this a few times. I live on a small lake with plenty of large trees. I have seen many cardinals and chickadees in the area and I have heard their familiar sounds at the same time as the "Jerry" call, so they could be the culprits. I just wish I could find a definitive answer.

I've always had a hard time with putting bird songs to words but could imagine one hearing "jear-ry, Jear-ey, jear-ey" just as easily as "tea-kettle, tea-kettle, tea-kettle" for a Carolina Wren.

I think it could be either Cardinal or Carolina Wren - both can use a similar pattern. I suggest listening to both online, and seeing which is closer.

Thanks for the help everyone. I don't think it's a Carolina Wren or a Veery. The Jerry call I'm hearing is a distinct 2 syllable sharp "Jear-ry." It could be a Cardinal, but I haven't heard any definitive sound recordings to confirm that. Guess I need to keep my eyes and ears open and hopefully observe it for myself.

I've always thought of the three-syllable Carolina wren songs as "Chee-burger, chee-burger, chee-burger!" But they also have a two-syllable version that I do think of as "Jersey, Jersey, Jersey!"

Mockingbirds usually sing in triplets, and then switch to another song. If your bird is consistently singing the same song, I doubt it is a Mockingbird.

I listened to the uTube video, and agree that the song at 2:17 sound a bit like an imitation of a phoebe - not that that proves anything, definitively. I think you'll actually have to go out and find the singer.

By the way, this mockingbird does, along with many other imitations, a very good Carolina Wren impression (2:38) and several of Northern Cardinal (e.g. 2:55).
