Any good bird books for Norway? (1 Viewer)

I’m going to Norway next year end of August early September and was wondering if anyone knew any good bird books for Norway?

For ID you would need the Collins guide, as in the UK. There are two websites that could be useful, although unfortunately one of them doesn't seem to exist now. This is the following:
This had lots of useful site information. You can use the 'Wayback Machine' to find stored archives, although these aren't as useful as the original site was. It will give details of how to access a number of good sites across Norway.

The other website is the excellent Norwegian bird (and other wildlife) record site:
This will give detailed and accurate information and is invaluable for finding any bird you might be interested in.

Hi Euan

I have 2 site guides to birding in Norway, both of which I highly recommend having used them both for trip planning and whilst away.

A Birdwatcher's Guide to Norway | NHBS Academic & Professional Books

This covers the whole of the country and split by region. It follows the typical site guide format including site description, maps, directions and access, notable species, other wildlife, etc. plus some excellent photos.

NHBS show it as out of print. Amazon have a copy for £469.45!

The publishers still list it at NOK399 (about £35) …. A Birdwarchers Guide to Norway | orn-forlag (ornforlag.no)

The other book is a specific guide to Varanger in the far north of Arctic Norway broken down in to the sub-areas of that large region and again including the usual information expected from a site guide plus both species photos and some aerial photos.

biotope: The Birding Varanger guide book - Arctic Norway sites & birds

Biotope

This is shown as sold out on the publisher’s website but if you contact them they might be able to advise where you can source it.

There is also this which I don’t have but which is also shown as out of print.

Birding Across the Border: Where to Watch Birds in Varanger and the Murmansk Region

It seems like birding books for Norway are very popular and print runs sell out!

Enjoy your trip to Norway next year. Start saving now, it is incredibly expensive!

Which part of Norway are you visiting Euan? Doc Duck lives in Trondheim, so it would be worth sending her a message. She posts regularly in the Gallery.

And so are these books as they're out of print.

I don't think that the books are so popular, they sell out because they don't print many.

Far more readily available is this Where to Watch Birds in Scandinavia: Amazon.co.uk: Gustaf Aulen, Johan M. Stenlund: 9780600584599: Books

....
Pretty steep prices, indeed. But even new, this book was not a bargain. When I got mine in 2013 from NHBS it cost me £54 including postage. That was about 80 Swiss Francs at the time.
