Always see red kites near harrogate (1 Viewer)

My job takes me from staffs to north Yorkshire for one day a week. While driving from Skipton to Harrogate and then to ilkley I always see at least 2 or 3 red kites flying about as I'm driving along, I hardly ever are any in staffs so I take it they must be pretty prolific in north Yorkshire from what I've seen, would I be correct?

Thanks

There was a release program in the area, I think, Harewood Hall near Harrogate.

I have relatives in Otley, near Harrogate, and they are common there from the house.

Yorkshire Red Kites

The Yorkshire Red Kite Project was the fifth in the sequence of re-introductions in the UK and began at Harewood Estate in West Yorkshire in 1999.

When we began our re-introduction in Gateshead's Derwent Valley, in 2004, the Yorkshire group sent us their holding pens. A huge lorry came with flatpacked packages which our volunteers built behind the Chapel at Gibside and in one other secret location.

Doug Simpson was awarded the MBE for his leadership of this project.

The first two kites of our project actually defected to join the Yorkshire Kites - Speedy and Scarlet. We have kept in touch with Yorkshire Kites and only last week I received a photograph of Scarlet on her nest, containing two chicks. We reckon she must have had at least 16 chicks!!!

Cheers Phil, will see how many I can see on Friday..

They're lovely aren't they? I work in Leeds and usually see at least 3-5 over fields and woods on my way to work every day. Been seeing them increasingly close to Leeds city centre too.

Yes, we always without fail see them between Leeds & Skipton when visiting OH's family.

We're in a Red Kite area too (Reading). I love them :t:
